Who is Mabel & What Does She Stand For?
Mabel’s Story
Amy has many fond memories from her childhood, like for example, her mom’s nighttime routine. There were very few nights where her mom would wind down without a bowl of microwave popcorn smothered in melted butter and salt. A simple snack, but one that was around nearly every night.
As Amy grew older and busier, her snacking became more of a mealtime than a little treat. By the time she began attending the University of St. Thomas, her snacking was more rampant and necessary than ever. Chemistry tends to take much mental energy, so fixing up a full meal wasn’t very likely. During her time at UST, Amy worked in manufacturing at a small company in Minneapolis. During her time, she experienced something that many women know too well: the inability to be treated as an equal to the many other men that dominated the workplace, or in other words, sexism.
She was confident in her abilities and felt like she was forever swimming against the current. With seemingly no end in sight, she eventually teamed up with her mom, Carmen, and her partner, Jake, to develop Mabel’s. She wanted to take the classic nostalgic snack of her childhood and make it better. No longer did she crave the artificial flavors and oils that coat microwave popcorn. She set off to create a popcorn that was unique with better ingredients, and ultimately, to provide a place where women (including herself) were heard, uplifted, and given opportunities to grow.
So, how did Mabel’s get its name? Given the common love for snacking on popcorn, among many other things she’s grateful to have because of her, Mabel’s is in honor of her mom, Carmen.
